Greetings from the William P. Cumming Map Society,
Mark your calendar for an event sponsored and hosted by the William P. Cumming Map Society and the North Carolina Collection Gallery at UNC-Chapel Hill.
The event includes a presentation by one of the pre-eminent colonial era cartographic scholars, Margaret Beck Pritchard, and an opportunity to view the North Carolina Collection Gallery’s exhibit, Compasses, Cartouches, and Creatures: Exploring the Art of North Carolina Maps.
Margaret will present, More than Meets the Eye: Symbolic Messages Conveyed Through Maps at 10:30 a.m. You thought maps showed where things are, or how to get from here to there? They do, but they also tell us a whole lot more, sometimes overtly, sometimes covertly. Join us for an excellent presentation on the hidden messages and sybolism that can be found in maps.
The exhibit in the Gallery, curated by Linda Jacobson, explores a selection of historical North Carolina maps and the ways that mapmakers used artistic embellishments to educate, entertain, and entice. Doors open at 10 a.m., so there will be brief times to view the exhibit before and immediately after Margaret’s presentation.
