Carolana is the name given by charter in 1629 to the region of Southeast North America that became known as Carolina (by a second charter in 1663). The patent owners of the original charter fought its cancellation. While the legal disputes wandered through British courts over the next century, Carolana wandered cartographically from North Carolina to the lower Mississippi River Valley, and, finally, to upstate New York.
